This Day Was Full of Surprises!

...started out with my finishing the Harry Potter book at 6:25 a.m, then went for a long 3 mile walk with jen, my dear friend....lucky, our dog, went too and did well til she chased a car full of dogs...ay yi yi! she has really come a long way, though, and stays to my commands. really!

...came home, and made the girls sunny-side up eggs and toast with butter. mmm, dip that toast in that yolk with a little salt....oooh.....and then i helped iolana make a pig for pop out of pink construction paper....a 3-D pig with dixie cup feet! and a flap that lifted (the snout) to reveal: i love you.

...then I was working in the office, answering emails, phone calls, when I got a call from Pennsylvania that was exactly what I was hoping for...a gig to support my Folk-n-Great show on Sept 8...thanks, Tom!!! We are now talking about my playing at Chaplin's!

...taught io how to play jacks today while lily started reading the harry potter book on the sofa (and couldn't hear anything anyone said to her all day long...except occassionally she'd look up and say, "mom...so and so just DIED!" and i would have to express sadness because now we have something to share over harry)...io and i had to work on her "bounce", cuz she throws the ball down instead of letting it bounce casually. if you play jacks, you know what i'm talking about. so we practiced dropping and catching, dropping and catching, and then i started tossing in one jack and letting her try to bounce, swoop a hand across the cool floor for the jack, and catch the ball. then, of course, it was explaining all about onesies, twosies, threesies...

...Stacey Earle and her awesome husband, Mark, have both agreed to perform at the "Music For Life" event on January 14 in Corpus Christi. Let me just say I am through the roof with happiness about this!!! We are going to go on Bambi's radio show the night before, as well, to sing, promote the event, whatever...hey! it's live radio at it's FINEST!!!!

...took the girls to swim lessons, wrote some letters to two dear friends (Ethridge and Julie), made dinner (pesto shrimp with pasta, steamed brocolli, salad, garlic bread and fresh green peas) and served it in those cool cafeteria trays that i am partial to...i like all the seperated tiny bins you can put the food in...it looks so tidy and fun!...practiced some on my guitar, talked with James about the SPU rehearsals with the kids (they are bonding! they are writing!),
made a giant poster for the mapping out of the entire year for the music for life tour...made lily's evite party invitation for her birthday party after we had spent time picking out just the right one (bowling) and sent them out to her friends...this is my first time to ever do this...i always send traditional paper invites...and let me say, it was easier than i thought! and fun to find RSVPS in my email...

...going to go look at some photos lance took with his russian camera (a holga...has great light leaks) and sit down with him to just chill before the night slips away...listening to girls talking in rooms down the hall (sleep overs, you know no one gets to bed on time...)

My Simple Thoughts on the Death Penalty

I'm not sure how killing anyone ever solves anything...for anyone. No matter who is being murdered, or who is being put to death, there are
grieving family members, there are children left without parents, there are loved ones and friends left to ponder in the heartache of, "What was solved?"

I'm someone who wants to start a dialogue. That's all. I don't have the answers. I simply want to get Texas talking about the death penalty
because we are the state with the greatest number of executions, and, yet, no one wants to talk about what it means.

I hope you will come out and join me at the "Music For Life" events that will be happening across our state for the next twelve months...come ask questions, come meet
family members of murder victims, come meet family members of those executed on death row. Come hear music and get involved at the same time. I'll post
the cities and locations here as we get them all confirmed...

This isn't easy. In fact, it's a scary. But the conversation must begin, and I hope it begins with you and me.

In Grace,
Sara

Walk Spain and Visit Romania’s Children

Hi All

As most of you know, I support a group that works with the children of Romania, Tanner Romanian Mission. They have taken in and adopted some of Romania's abandoned, orphaned children, and given them love, a home, schooling and family. Sandie Tanner, one of the amazing founders, just sent me this enticing email, and I wanted to send it out to you all, in case anyone wanted to participate.
Love,
Sara

WALK CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, SPAIN AND HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR SPEECH/PHYSICAL THERAPISTS for ROMANIAN CHILDREN

In May 2008 join us as we walk the last 11 days of the Camino de Santiago, a magnificent route through the rolling green hills and small hamlets of northwestern Spain's Galicia.

The crown jewel of Spanish walking trails, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela began as an act of faith as Europeans crossed Spain to visit the sacred tomb of Saint James. One thousand years later, the Camino continues to draw the spiritual as well as the traveler looking to enjoy the beauty of Spain. The outstanding food and the company of other 'pilgrims' from all over the world only adds to the unique nature of a trip like this.

After 11 days of walking through the beautiful Spanish countryside and getting to know the other international hikers on your team you will spend a night in Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela is a magical city filled with fantastic monuments and with a lively buzz from the international pilgrims and university students that fill its medieval streets.

After our stay in Spain we will fly to Bucharest, Romania to visit the orphans your funds will assist. We will travel outside of Bucharest to the Galeti district where we all shall stay for 2 nights while we visit disabled kids in 4 Christian group homes. The funds raised from this trip will pay for a speech therapist and a physical therapist for these very deserving children.

After our farewell dinner we will return to Bucharest to catch our connecting flights home. Join us as we embark on an adventure through Spain and Romania.

Later Than You Think

Here is my new song, "Later Than You Think" that I wrote that Sunday morning in Okemah, Oklahoma during the Woody Guthrie Festival....

Later Than You Think
By Sara Hickman

There’s no shame in wanting to change things
But you’ll have to be brave and you’ll have to keep the faith
Cuz you’re up against a very mighty empire
That has no second thought about laying you to waste

All the guns and bombs we’re building
Bring all the buildings down
As we kill for peace – and never really gain relief
Can’t we see an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind?

Why don’t we learn to come together
Why don’t we lay these weapons down?
Why don’t we live the
Peace
That each and every one of us seeks
Cuz it’s late…Yea, it’s
Later than you think

Look me in the eye and justify what we’re doing
In whose name are we building these bombs
Is it the thrill of the kill
That we still remain the same
Cuz eventually each and everyone of us
Will be gone

Men in expensive suits - houses full of greed
Children in tatters … living on the streets
How can it be such a vast dichotomy
Of all this wealth
And all this poverty
I’ve got a thought and I hope that you’ll agree

Why don’t we learn to come together
Why don’t we lay these weapons down?
Why don’t we live the
Peace
That each and every one
Of us seeks
Cuz it’s late…Yea, it’s
Later than you think

SOLO

How can it be such a vast dichotomy
Of all this wealth
And all this poverty
I’ve got a thought and I hope that you’ll agree

Why don’t we learn to come together
Why don’t we lay these weapons down?
Why don’t we live the
Peace
That each and every one
Of us seeks
Cuz it’s late…Yea, it’s
Later than you think

We’ve got to learn
How
We’ve got to start
Now
We gotta start
Today
We gotta make a new way

What Has Been Going On Round Here

walked with the girls up to 7-11 and got Squishees

the rain keeps falling down and has come into our house...again...

practiced the last two days with five teens for Super Pal Universe at the Music Lab...we are writing music for the show, for ACL Fest, for...working with james mays, who is helping out as our musical director. i've been playing electric guitar and giving feedback, but mostly, james and i are trying to let the kids work up their own ideas.

prepping for my speaking engagement on saturday in college station

rehearsal tonight for ACL with lorrie and kristin

shopping with lily in the mall for new shirts and we had a blast...last night, we went to have gelatto...it was sweet and cold...i had dulce de leche, she had chocolate

iolana, lily and i have been laughing over nothing a lot lately...wrestling and tussling and being silly girls.

reading: we've been facilating between reading the bible and "each little bird that sings"...we are up to kings in the bible. it is numbing with all these crazy names, but we are hanging in there and excited about almost getting to the new testament.

cleaning out my closet

working out at curves. i have lost four pounds.

almost closed on the deal to buy my masters back from shanachie! i am very, very excited about this! i will own "spiritual appliances" and "two kinds of laughter"!!!!!!!!

working hard on the TCADP "music for life" tour...trying to find musicians who will perform on each of the twelve events...so far, barbara k, shelley king and trish murphy have said yes to helping out. we had a meeting yesterday with all the principals about filming the events, making a documentary, the cities we will be visiting to discuss the death penalty issue and perform music....

my cat threw up on the kitchen floor while i was making malt-o-meal this morning. i felt sad for her, she is 16 years old and so brittle. i gave her a hug and cleaned it all up. i wish she could eat some malt-o-meal. it makes everything seem so much better. she is sleeping in lily's room, safe from the dreary rain.
